Adit
An adit is an entrance for an underground mine which is horizontal and adits are generally built into the side of a mountain and often appear when coal or ore is found inside a mountain but higher than the valley or plain. Adits are generally used in what is known as drift mining and adits have advantages over conventional shaft mining that use vertical access shafts that you can fall down in.
